About Tony Hazen

County Commissioner Tony Hazen, a dedicated lifelong resident of Mishawaka in St. Joseph County, brings a wealth of experience and commitment to the community as he seeks re-election to the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, District 3. As the Mishawaka Councilman from District 3, Tony has been at the forefront of local governance, ensuring a strong voice for the community. In his nearly 50 years of marriage to his wife Lou Ann, Tony has been a devoted family man, raising four children and enjoying being a grandfather to 10.

Tony's professional journey reflects his deep roots in St. Joseph County. A graduate of Mishawaka High School, the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School, and the Indiana Police Executive Leadership Academy, Tony served as a Police Officer with the Mishawaka Police Department for 23 years. His dedication and leadership qualities led to his appointment as Police Chief for 6 1⁄2 years under Mayor Bob Beutter.

Beyond his law enforcement career, Tony has contributed significantly to the community. As a local business owner for over 40 years, he has firsthand experience in promoting and sustaining local businesses. Recognizing the importance of responsible economic development that uplifts the entire community while preserving our Hoosier values. Tony is committed to the same balanced approach he has used to bring new development to Mishawaka’s 3rd district.

Tony's community involvement extends beyond law enforcement and business. He has been a supporter of the Mishawaka Education Foundation, the Food Pantry, and East End Little League. Additionally, Tony has actively participated in initiatives such as the D.A.R.E. Program, Take Heart/Drive Smart Campaign, and Mishawaka School Resource Officers, working closely with the school and city of Mishawaka to ensure the safety of our children.

Recognized for his community contributions, Tony Hazen received the Mishawaka Business Association's Business of the Year award in 2018. His dedication to service is further evident in his role as an appointee to the Judicial Nominating Committee, where he served a four-year term.

Seeking re-election to the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, District 3, Tony Hazen has outlined key initiatives and goals. His focus includes neighborhood safety, drawing on his extensive law enforcement experience, as well as promoting local businesses to ensure St. Joseph County remains a safe, economically stable, and welcoming place. With a track record of fiscal responsibility, Tony has experience overseeing budgets in excess of 6 million dollars and managing 140 employees during his tenure as Police Chief.

In addition to his initiatives, Tony emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability in local government, recognizing the importance of keeping the community informed and engaged. Furthermore, he envisions St. Joseph County as a place where our children and grandchildren choose to live, work, and start families of their own. Tony believes that to ensure long-term success, we must have an eye focused on the next generation, fostering a community that is vibrant, safe, and built for the future.
